Globalization

What is globalization for me?

During our education, we spend a lot of attention to globalisation.
First of all, we can see this in the name change of our school. Before the change, it was ' Catholic high school Kempen'. The word 'Catholic' pointed out the religious background of our school. This meant that only catholic student could go this school. The school decided that not only catholic students could go to school, but that everybody is welcome at our school. That's the reason why they changed their name to "Thomas More Kempen".

The second thing that the school does, is the thick sweater day. At this day, everybody should come to school in a thick sweater because the  heating is turned down compared to other days. The reason why the school does this, is that all of us should contribute to the climate. Everybody is responsible for the global warming.
The third thing is that we prepare children for their future life in our society. One of my subjects at school is projects. This is a course for students who only want to learn practical things instead of theoretical things. This is a education for secondary grade school. My teachers warned us that we can have a lot of different students, because there are lot of immigrants in our country. Most of the immigrants end up in the practice education. We must be prepared to this variety and give every student/ immigrant the chance to integrate into our society. That this people can work and live in the same society then we do. Everyone deserves a chance to integrate into our society.
Our school does much more than what i mention above, but these are the most important things they do to help us develop ourselves, and become aware of what is going on in the world and in our society.

Words of the session

Globalization:
Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment. This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world.

Professional challenge:
Professional challenge is a positive activity and a sign of good professional practice, a healthy organisation and effective multiagency working.  Being professionally challenged should not be seen as a slur on the person’s professional capabilities.

  1. Emmely, I have just read your post about globalization and I am very surprised about all with the second thing: thick sweater day. I didn't know that schools in Belgium carried out this idea, which I found really interesting. In my opinion, it is a good way to show pupils that they have to do actions to solve the climate change. It is a good way to involve pupils in the global problems, being aware of the importance of doing individual things to solve global issues.
Furthermore, I consider that this fact reflects in a very good way what gobalization means. Everybody must wear a thick sweater because they have to contribute to solve a global and universal problem, such as the climate change, that affects everybody in the world. That's why using globalization process we can join our individual actions to fight together versus the climate change.
Finally, I would like to add that with the first and third thing, your school was also increasing ans using globalization, because they taught you to respect and accept everybody, without taking into account our nationality or our culture. They wanted to show that they integrated everybody, so that pupils must also respect, be prepared and help immigrant to be integrated in our society.

  2. Emmely,
You have been successful in designing your blog. Congratulations!

Here is feedback to you on the theme “Globalization”
Concerning task 1 which is ..:”Reflect on this quote: Globalization can ... be define as the intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa.' (Anthony Giddens, former director of London School of Economics).

You have described and reflected on what globalization is for you and in your teacher education and Belgian school context, and it is really intresting to read.

Concerning task 2 which is ..:”Write core concepts from this challenge with definitions” which is the same as the section called ”Glossary”: “ In this section you collect 3-7 core concepts from each challenge to form your personal glossary on globalization. Write your own definition in English AND in your own language. Order the concepts thematically and/or alphabetically”

You have started your “Glossary” as a very fine summery óf what globalization is according to Friedman.
I hope you will use the opportunity evry week to collect a lot of relevant words and concepts

    Yours
