Identity

Identity means being a completely consistent and equal person to everybody you come in contact with. The idea that someone has about himself is self-image or self-concept.

Story Telling

We got a group assignment to make a story based on different pictures we received. In what order it was, did not matter.

Together with other international and Danish students we created a story. The story went as follows:
Once, a bird dropped his can of paint on the roof of a man.
The man did not mind. He painted his house in all colors of the rainbow. He also planted several exotic plants in his front yard.

The entire street came to watch his work. Everyone was so fascinated that they also went to work. One transformed his house into a boat, the other a hot air balloon, a mosque, a castle or an acropolis.
The result was that the street became a new street: A multicultural, international street.

Reflection:

This
was a very good activity, because we had to work together with different people with different nationalities. This made it even more interesting, because we had to tell the story in our own language. In this way, everyone had their own input into the activity. Everyone could give a piece of themselves, making the story a multicultural story. A story in which everyone could be himself. This made the activity fun and enjoyable.

Definitely an activity that you can do with big and small children. A good introduction so that children feel safe and feel that they are accepted for who they are.
Regardless of language, gender, ...

The article is about young people who are constantly looking at themselves: Who am I? Where am I? ... . All questions that children can ask you.

We as teachers all come into contact with students who are looking for themself, their identity, ... . Therefore we need to support them in their quest. We must prepare ourselves for these situations, questions, subjects, ... .

That's why I chose this article because I find this very important and I feel that it is our job to support and help the children find their own way. You must be an example for the children, making them feel safe and feel appreciated. This is an important asset that we as teachers must possess and pass on to our students.

Resume
In the recent past, there have been a lot of incidents in Brussels
. The book "Identity
and interculturality. Identity Construction in young people in Brussels' extensively
highlights a number of issues with the underlying causes. In this book, young
people and
social scientists from different disciplines express their views about the
problem of identity
in the metropolitan, Brussels context. The explicit purpose of
the collection is to stimulate awareness and intercultural engagement. The book
arises from
the project Ideal Brussels Kif Kif and the Flemish Community. This was
intended
to encourage reflection on oneself, others and the city. The result is a
book that
contains three parts: a theoretical, a practical and a mixed part.

Comment:
The events of this book have taken place in the capital of Belgium, Brussels. The message and practical activities of the book can however be used for everyone. In each country, region, city and village interculturality is present, so you can work anywhere with this subject. Just like in a classroom. In a classroom with children there is also interculturality. It is important that you give your children the right message, but for that you have to first have a clear idea about interculturality in your class, village, country, around the world, ... . Therefore, this book can also be an inspiration for different situations and activities that you can do with children.

This is a project about how 'everybody is different', on which you could work intensively for an entire week together with the children. It is a project that you can do with children of primary school.

This project has made me realise, that everyone is different. And that we have to think about this fact nowadays. Especially as a teacher. You have to pass on the message "everyone is different" to your students, so that they realize that not everyone is the same and that we have to learn how to interact with each other. Therefore I think this project is very suitable to the theme and to apply it to pupils. These activities ensure that students gain a broader perspective on "everyone is different". This is also the goal of the project. They broaden their view and learn to accept everyone for who they are.
Everyone is different and that makes our world unique.

This is a project to work on at the beginning of the school year. In a fun and playful way, pupils get the message that everyone is different and that we must learn to respect each other for how we are. Everyone is unique and that is a fact that we must accept.

This project is perfect to do with students in primary school. You can also do this project in a secondary school. Only then you should adjust the activities so that the students are challenged more. The level of this project is for students in primary school. But is not excluded for students of secondary education.

Identity can have a different meaning if you look at it from different aspects. We often think immediately that we get a passport that proves that we are a citizen of a country, region.
Identity can however be expressed in many ways, as we see in the movie about art. We do not often think about it, but artists often express their identity, who they are, their feelings, ... .

By using this video in your lessons, you can also point out to students that there is a message behind art (street art). And often, the identity of the artist is reflected in his art.
To make this more clear to students, you can also work with them around the theme of street art. Because many artist express themselves in the street, street art often contains multiple identities from different artists. This also causes the students to create a broader view on identity, street art, ... .

Reflection

An important part of Identity is freedom. Freedom means to be themselves in what you do.
The relationship between freedom and identity can be seen in different ways.

You are who you want to be. What I am is an expression of a free choice you make. You decide what you want to, without being affected by others. Out of interest and voluntary choice. As long as you can choose for yourself, you wil keep your own identity. So choosing for yourself is an important part of your identity.

By choosing for yourself, you can take your own responsibility and things can develop which can be beneficiary for everybody in society.
